The facts

Sharpless 269 is an emission nebula in Orion, catalogued as LBN 876. SIMBAD gives its distance as 4.27 kpc (−0.85 kpc / +0.85 kpc) — ≈ 13,900 ly, measured by its motion through the Galaxy from 1 measurement. The light reaching us from it now left it about 13,900 years ago, when early Homo sapiens lived through the ice ages. On the sky it spans 4.0′ — 13% of the full Moon's width. At that distance, that angle means it is roughly 16 light-years across.
